    Santi vs. Southern Gold

Hip-hop fans around the world are furious at the non-release of mixer Terry Urban’s ‘Southern Gold’ mixtape.

The short time I spent working at a local record store, I quickly became aware of our best sellers: mix tapes. Local hip-hop and rap djs would drop off their weekly burn copies of the hottest urban and rap beats. The cover art was obliviously done on their home computers; pasting together some of todays more popular acts. Why buy the entire album when you can have all the top hits for five dollars less?

I finally broke down one day and bought a mix tape of my own. I couldn’t enjoy my favorite tracks without a backdrop of the mixer’s name every ten seconds and to top it off, you’d be lucky to hear the entire track. Nevertheless, these “tapes” were consistently on our best seller racks and still are.

Anyone can mix now-a-days and it seems like the entire world is suing each other over it…and that is exactly what is happening.

Mixman Terry Urban was scheduled to a world-wide release of his latest creation of “Southern Gold”. The album’s goal was to combine some of the best southern rappers to a remixed version of Santigold. Urban’s art cover features rap superstar, Lil Wayne in the same color sense as that of Santigold’s.

As some of you might already know, ‘Santogold’ was a big hit album last year under female vocalist, Santi White aka Santigold. The album was considered an electronic dub with collaborations in such genres as rock, post punk, and new wave.

White’s lawyers of Downtown Records gave notice to Urban the night before his initial release date. So far, no current news has been released as to give Urban the green flag or to what exactly Downtown Records intend on doing on this case or in perhaps, future cases.

For the time being, an anonymous fan has posted an online petitioning site on behalf the Dj vs. the label.http://www.petitiononline.com/DOWNTOWN/petition.html
